Jujutsu Kaisen has one of the best and most complicated power systems in anime, almost comperable to HunterXHunter.
The power in JJK is called cursed energy, it is the manifestation of negative emotions, such as fear or regret. Every living thing has some amount of cursed energy, although not everything can harness it, those who can are referred to as jujutsu sorcerers, or curse users. Cursed energy exists everywhere in some places, such as hospitals or schools it's more concentrated, in places like this curses can be born, curses are physical manefistations of this cursed energy. Some of these curses are born from human fears, similar to the devils in "Chainsaw Man," the strongest of these curses being referred to as the Disaster Curses being based off human fears of water based natural disasters (Dagon), volcanic eruptions (Jogo), hate and fear humans have for each other (Mahito), and lastly, fear of natural disasters(Hanami).
Sorcerers and curses in JJK are ranked by Grades, the lowest being first grade, and the highest being special grade, the rank of special grade is reserved for those of extreme power there only being 4 special grade sorcerers in the time of the story, Gojo Satoru, Yuta Okkotsu, Suguru Geto, and Yuki Tsukomo, there is also Kenjaku, although he's from ~1000 years ago but was able to stay alive via his technique. There are a lot more special grade curses than sorcerers, for example, all of the disaster curses, as well as one of the main antagonists of the story Ryomen Sukuna. As shown in the graphic to the left, a sorcerer is supposed to be able to easily defeat a curse the same grade as them, and be almost comperable to the skill of a curse the grade above.
Innate techniques are one of two types of cursed techniques. Innate techniques are techniques which are engraved into the users body, specifically the right prefrontal cortex of their brain. A majority of Jujutsu sorcerers are born with an innate technique which manifest around the age of five or six and become more engrained in them and refined as they age. In almost all cases a person can only hold one innate technique, there are two exceptions to this, Yuta Okkotsu, and Kenjaku, who have their own reasons for being able to use multiple. Below I listed a few of the innate techniques from JJK.
Inherited techniques are techniques passed down to sorcerers sharing a bloodline. The big three families have kept their prestige and authority by passing down powerful technique to their descendants, thus if someone in the clan is born with one of these techniques they are guarenteed an important roll in ther clan. There are four known families with inherited techniques, so just one outside of the big 3 families. The Zenin family has two techniques which can be inherited, the first being the Ten Shadows Technique, there is only one person in the show who uses it, the other inherited technique of the Zenin family is Projection Sorcery which is held by two people in the show. The next big 3 family is the Gojo family, the inherited technique of their family is called Limitless, it is a very complicated, complicated enough that I can't comprehend it enough to explain it. The last of the big 3 families is the Kamo family, the inherited technique of the Kamo Clan is Blood Manipulation, this technique is held by two people. The last inherited technique in the show belongs to a family outside the big 3 clans, it belongs to the Inumaki Clan, the technique is called Cursed Speech and there is only one known user of it in the show.
Domain expansions are a very advanced barrier technique, and is considered one of the pinnacles of jujutsu sorcery. A domain expansion is achieved by constructing ones innate domain within a barrier imbued with their innate technique. Withing a domain expansion, the casters innate technique is both amplified to a great degree, and given a guarenteed hit effect. A domain is cast using a hand sign which is unique to every user, and once cast a majority of domains are completely closed off and from the outside appear like a large black floating ball. There are two types of domains, non-lethal and lethal. Lethal domains are the more common ones in the current story, they are simply as I described before, a domain which uses a sure-hit effect to deal lethal blows. Non-Lethal domains were more common in the past, non-lethal domains rather than imbuing an innate techniqe and imbuing a sure-hit, it simply forces all those caught inside to abide by the rules set for the domain, as time progressed lethal domains became more common, users of domain expansions became less common. An example of a non lethal domain in the current story it Higuruma's domain expansion. A domain can be incomplete, a domain is incomplete if it is cast using just cursed energy without embedding an innate technique, even if a barrier is deployed, completely closing the barrier embeds the technique allowing the sure-hit effect, without that they simply recieve an increase in power to their cursed technique. There are drawbacks to domain expansions, they're high risk, high reward, they consume immense amounts of cursed energy, because of that it can only be performed about once a day, the only exceptions to that being Satoru Gojo and Hakari Kinji, for their own reasons. There are two ways to counter a domains sure-hit effect, the first one is just reinforcing oneself with cursed energy, which is the more impractical of the two methods, the other method is an anti-domain technique. There are two anti-domain techniques, New Shadow Style: Simple Domain, and Hollow Wicker Basket, both of those nullify the barrier's embedded technique, thus negating the sure-hit effect. Domains are very hard to escape, the volume of the space on the inside of the domain is completely different from the outside, this makes it hard for someone inside to find the boundary of the domain. The more reinforced a domain is from the inside the weaker it is on the outside this allows for, in certain situations, allies outside the domain to break into it, for example during Nanami's and Yuji's fight against Mahito after Nanami was caught in Mahito's domain Yuji broke into it to save him. There is also one other counter measure to a domain expansion, that being to expand ones own domain, this is the best way to counteract a domain, this would be called a domain clash, in which the the more refined domain will dominate. The amount of time it takes for one domain to overtake another will vary based on the strength of both domains, and while domains are overlapping their sure-hit effects cancel each other out, if the domains are evenly matched and the users simply fight with them open as soon as one of the combatants takes excessive damage, or their domain collapses the other users domains sure-hit effect will immediately take effect. If three domains were to clash its way more complicated and could cause the barriers to shatter before being fully formed due to how many factors there are. Below I'll list some of the Domain Expansions seen in the show and explain them to the best of my ability.
A binding vow is a pact made with Jujutsu which created conditions for oneself, or an agreement with others. By all Jujutsu users binding vows are considered one of the essential principles of jujutsu. A binding vow is essentially a contract made using cursed energy, they can be made with one self, or with another person. By abiding by the rules and restrictions placed in this contract one could gain greater power, or obtain a goal, but if they break the binding vow they will be given uncanny repurcussions. A vow with one-self is a self imposed restriction that are potentially harmful to the creator, for example limiting ones cursed energy for a period of time, this type of vow can be used to increase the users cursed energy output, and power of cursed techniques. The pentalty of breaking a vow with oneself is the loss of whatever was gained in the contract initially. There are 2 known self-imposed vows in the series, the first one being, Revealing One's Hand, a vow used by all sorcerers and cursed spirits, and other one being Overtime, a self-imposed vow used by Kento Nanami. Revealing Ones Hand is a vow which increases the user's cursed energy output by verbally divulging their cursed technique and how it works to their opponent, it's effectiveness can be increased if the user knows what they're doing they can withhold information to misdirect their opponent, an example of this is in Yuji and Todo's fight against Hanami in which he Todo revelaed his Boogie Woogie technique to Hanami, however he didn't disclose all the information, and later in the fight used this to his advantage. The other self-imposed binding vow, Overtime, is only used by one person, Kento Nanami, this binding vow limits the amount of cursed energy he can access to about 80-90% while on the clock working for Jujutsu high, as soon as his normal shift ends and he begins working overtime his cursed energy output increases exponentially, when overtime is active Nanami can access about 110-120% of his maximum cursed energy. A binding vow made between two people is bound by cursed energy, both parties have to agree to a particular set of conditions which benefits both parties, the penalty for breaking a vow made with someone else is said to be far greater than that of a self-imposed one. There are five known vows in the show, I'm just gonna explain three of them so it's easier for me. The first one is a vow made between Yuji Itadori and Ryomen Sukuna, while Yuji's body was deceaseed, Sukuna offered to revive him, and in turn Sukuna would be able to take control of Yuji's body by chanting the keyword, enchain, condition was that Yuji would completely forget about the vow being made upon being revived. The second one seen is a binding vow between Kokichi Muta (Mechamaru) and Mahito, in this vow they agreed that Muta would act as an informant for Mahito and Psuedo Geto, upon completing his end of the deal Muta would be healed by Mahito's idle transfiguration, one condition of the vow was that Mahito not lay a finger on any of the Kyoto students. The last vow I'm gonna explain is a binding vow between Yuta Okkotsu and the higher ups, Yuta was forced into a binding vow in which he had to kill Yuji Itadori.
A heavenly restriction is a type of cursed restriction which affects someone's cursed energy in exchange for limitations or improvements to the body. Heavenly restrictions are described in the manga as a binding placed on the sorcerer's body upon birth. In most cases the binding refers to a limitation to the persons physical capabilites in return for improvement in a different area. The two heavenly restrictions seen in the series are inverse of each other, the first one being someone who is greatly gifted physically but lacks any cursed energy, the other being someone who's body was extremely fragile but has copious amounts of cursed energy, there have been 2 people in the story with the former, and one with the latter. The two people who lacked cursed energy in exchange for immense phsical strength are Toji Fushiguro (originally Zenin, took wifes name due to resentment towards Zenin clan), and Maki Zenin, both people almost unparalleled in physical Toji being able to easily defeat a pre awaking Gojo, and Maki being able to completely solo the Zenin clan with relative ease after her awakening. The one person to hold the other type of restriction is Kokichi Muta (Mechamaru), he was born without the lower parts of his legs, and right arm, and his skin was unbelievably sensitive, so much so that even moonlight burned him, he was also in a constant pain which he described as every pore of his body being stabbed constantly, in exchange for this he holds vast amounts of cursed energy, allowing him to control a numerous amount of mechamaru puppets, as well as control them over very long distances. Pictured below is Maki Zenin and Toji Fushiguro pictured side by side, this was post Maki awakening. Beside that photos is a panel of Kokichi Muta shown wrapped in bandages and in a bath of some sort, due to his physical condition at the time, he is conversing with Panda and there he explains the downsides of his binding vow.
Shikigami are monstrous creatures that resemble cursed spirits which can be summoned by sorcerers to fight alongside them in battle. People who summon shikigami to aid in battle are called shikigami users. Shikigami cannot be seen by non-sorcerers and tamed to serve their masters. They are summoned using mediums, such as talismans or other methods, such as shadows like the ten shadows technique uses. The conjuration of shikigami is considered a cursed technique, same as barrier techniques. There are 14 known shikigami in the story, ten of them being apart of the ten shadows technique. I'm gonna name and explain two of them. The first one is Judgeman, this shikigami belongs to Hiromi Higuruma and it connected to his innate technique, Judgeman serves as the Judge in Higuruma's domain expansion: Deadly Sentencing. The other shikigami I'm gonna explain is Garuda who is the shikigami belonging to Yuki Tsukumo, similar to Judgeman, Garuda is tied to Yuki's innate technique: Star Rage, while Garuda is under the effects of the technique (which were explained above) he can be used as a cursed tool by Yuki.
A phenomenom that may occur during a jujutsu battle in which a sorcerers physical power is exponentially increased due to the application of cursed energy within one-millionth of a second of an attack. The application of cursed energy within 0.000001 seconds of a physical attack causes a distortion in space and causes the users cursed energy to flash black, and increases the destructive power of their attack by a power of 2.5. Utilizing black flash takes immense concentration, and it is impossible for a sorcerer to use them at will, not even Satoru Gojo can. Although it is not a random occurecnce and takes much skill to pull off. There are some people who are thought to be "blessed by the sparks of black," such as Yuji Itadori, although Yuji is not the only one, because the sparks do not choose who to bless. According to Aoi Todo the difference in understanding of the essence of cursed energy between those who have experienced black flash and those who have not is like that of heaven from earth. Kento Nanami who up until recently held the record for consecutive black flashes (lost when Yuji absolutely cooked Sukuna and more than doubled Nanami's record) stated that using black flash consecutively is no impressive feat (although he is an overly modest guy), he s states that regardless of how they achieved the initial black flash they enter a state in which controlling their cursed energy becomes second nature, like breathing or walking, the result of this is akin to felling omnipitent, as the user feels like the world revolves around them, entering a state Nanami compared to "the zone" which athletes enter when locked in on competition. This leads to a huge increase in combat performance, allowing the user to perform at 120% their maximum potential, an example of this happening was during Yuji, Todo, and Mahito's fight in Shibuya, after all having landed black flashes all three of them were operating at 120% of their maximum potential. There are 8 people who have used black flash, the first being Yuta Okkotsu who has only achieved it once, and it was anime only, as it did not occur in the manga, then there's Kento Nanami, who for over a year held the record for most consecutive black flashes, which was 4, he hit these during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, then of course Yuji Itadori who had not only tied Nanami's record upon his first occurence of hitting a black flash but holds the current record of 9 consecutive black flashes, all hit on Sukuna, then Nobara Kugisaki who has landed one black flash landing it in Sync with Yuji during their fight with Eso and Kechizu, fifth person is Mahito, he hit two black flashes both during the shibuya incident the first one on Yuji after stunning him by fatally wounded Nobara and caught him off guard, the second being on Todo after catching him in his .2 second domain expansion. Then Todo who only hit it once during his and Yuji's fight with Mahito. Of course Satoru gojo has landed a black flash before, with the first time being sometime before the exchange event in the show, he landed four over the course of the show, all during his fight with Sukuna. Sukuna is the final known person to land a black flash, with a total of four across the events of the manga, all being post Gojo fight, and during his fight with Yuji and the others.
Reversed Cursed Technique is a special kind of cursed technique which takes cursed energy and reverses it, turning it into positive energy. It is a very complicated technique, and thus isn't used by the masses, it's primary use is healing human bodies. Normally only cursed spirits can heal using cursed energy because cursed energy is negative energy, and is what they are made of, but skilled sorcerers can take that negative energy and turn it into positive energy, fit for healing humans. It uses the same concepts as in math, in regards to multiplying by negatives, by multiplying the negative cursed energy by itself the result is positive cursed energy, which has the ability to heal humans. Normally cursed energy is concentrated in the gut, but when using this technique it is concentrated in the brain. RCT can rebuild anything, blood, bone, flesh, or organs, so people proficient in it can regrow whole limbs and withstand powerful attacks such as Sukuna's domain. Speed and effectiveness of the process varies depends on the proficiency of the user. In rare cases it can also be used to repair the soul, however the person must be able to percieve the shape of the soul, the only characters who can do that being, Sukuna, Yuji, Maki, Toji, Mahito, and Kenjaku. Most RCT users can only heal themselves using it, as it is more efficient to use reversed cursed energy throughout ones own body than to externally pump it through someone elses. Using RCT someone can perform Cursed Technique Reversal, which is simply done by using positive cursed energy when performing a cursed technique which results in the technique doing the opposite of what it normally does, for expample, Gojo's blue attracts, while his cursed technique reversal red repels. There are two ways to deal with a reverse cursed techique user, the first being to completely destroy their brain due to the fact that the energy comes from the brain when performing RCT, another way is to poison them as removing poison from ones system with RCT is extremely difficult and I believe the only person capable of it is Shoko Ieri. The known users of RCT are Ryomen Sukuna, Kenjaku, Shoko Ieiri, Satoru Gojo, Yuki Tsukomo, Yuta Okkotsu, Uraume, Iori Hanezoki, Tranquil Deer, Hiromi Higuruma, Yuji Itadori, and Kinji Hakari, Hakari is a special case because as explained before due to his domain expansion he reflexively performs RCT while under the effects of the jackpot, because of this, Hakari is essentially unkillabale during that period, during his encounter with Kashimo, Kashimo attempted to bypass the RCT by destroying Hakari's brain, as mentioned before, but Hakari's brain was able to heal faster than Kashimo's lightning could destroy it. Poison also doesn't work on him because of how much RCT is happening, hence the line "In the 4 minutes and 11 seconds following a Jackpot Hakari is effectively Immortal." Below is photo of Hakari healing his abdomen after taking a direct hit from Kashimo, you can see the process of his bones, muscle tissue, etc. being regrown via cursed energy. Also below is a photo of Sukuna healing Megumi after he got pimp smacked by Mahoraga during the Shibuya Incident.
